![]() There are shifting battle conditions and enemies you can attack safely from different directions. The controls are simple to get used to, and you can play the whole thing from the comfort of your mouse. Things spiral out of control rapidly once you lose sight of your objective. ![]() If you rush in without a clear plan or knowledge of what's coming next, things will go badly. By planning the correct route and offering support for your units, you'll see victory. ![]() You have a limited number of each of these to use, although more will be dropped onto the battlefield for you to pick up, and the rationing of the powers and their tactical use is a big part of your job. You help by using powers that can heal units, smoke screens that can hide units from enemy view, decoys that draw the enemy's fire, or by calling in airstrikes. It's your job to be aware of where you are, where you're going, and the safety of your units. While you can hit a button and speed up time, the game moves at its own pace, and missions can change in the heat of battle. You control a character who moves on foot, following a series of armored units that drive along and destroy everything they see. So how does it work?Īt any point you can switch to a tactical view where you can see the entirety of the level and the enemies, and plan your route through the twisting streets. ![]() Instead, you're the invading force, moving slowly but steadily toward the heart of alien-controlled ruins on Earth. This is tower defense, but in this case you're not the one defending. What you can do is plan their route through each level and offer some support in the way of power-ups. You can't select what enemies your units attack, or the speed at which they move. With Anomaly: Warzone Earth, available now for Windows and Mac OS X, you have to give up much of that control. When we play a game we want to be able to exert our influence in every way possible to guide our avatar or team to the best possible outcome. Outside of that there’s a lot of fun tucked away in this 800 point game, especially if you’re looking for something a bit unique. It's hard to give up control. The only real nitpick I had with the early build was that when you purchase units you can’t see how much money you have left as the purchase overlay sits on top of the monetary counter. The preview build only included the Baghdad levels and left me wanting for more content. It’s a nice addition and adds a bit to the value of the game. This means that you probably want to skip the damage dealing missile launchers and instead focus on tougher but less offensive APC’s and shield units to protect them. For example one of the first trials has you trying to get past mines which if detonated will destroy most of your convoy. The Tactical Trials are basically puzzles that force you to think more closely about how you get your convoy through and how your approach the puzzles. The other new addition to the Xbox version is the addition of Tactical Trials which are unlocked by playing through the single player portion of the game. The battlefield is constantly shifting and you will have to change your tactics as you move through the maps. The strategy portion of the game has you planning out which route to take to get to the end of a level and the unit mix you need to have in your convoy. ![]() The game is a fun mix of strategy and action. It turns out that the meteor is actually a giant alien spaceship which creates a large bubble around the crash site and now you have to take control of a squad and explore the device and figure out what’s going on. The backstory for Anomaly:Warzone Earth is that a meteor has crashed landed in Baghdad. It may sound a little odd but it’s a gameplay style that you really fall in love with once you get into it. If you haven't played the iOS or PC verison of Anomaly, the game is a twist on the Tower Defense genre in that you control the invading horde of enemies rather than setting up the defenses to stop them. Anomaly:Warzone Earth is finally making its way to the Xbox 360 later this week. ![]()
